A very daring movie for its time, starring Johnny Weismuller / Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan / Jane Parker (and also Mia Farrow's mom). None of the versions of the swimming sequence were included in the theatrical release in 1934 but even so, the costumes must have been outrageous for the period. Presumably escaped the censor in the name of art (like the '60s Hammer films). My favourite Tarzan movie. Bizarre contrasts of the prim well-spoken Jane and grunting Tarzan.

Themes that run through all but the most recent series (that set in New York) is that all wild animals are out to get you (!) and that native porters are quite dispensable items if you have plenty of them (!!). Supporting cast Paul Cavanagh / Martin Arlington and Neil Hamilton / Harry Holt. Neil Hamilton appears elsewhere on this site as Commissioner Gordon in the Batman tv series. To put the movie's age in perspective, Paul Cavanagh was born in 1888. Unfortunately the release to dvd of this classic movie was not accompanied by refurbishing the original (scratches and general on-picture garbage) nor engineering at good quality.
